Senior Care in Montclair, NJ for Alzheimer’s Patients

There may come a time when the Alzheimer’s patient may tell you through words or actions that she does not care for you anymore, or does not love you anymore. She may also say you don’t love or care about her anymore either. When this happens with your client in senior care services, this can really hurt. If it’s a loved family member you care for, it can feel devastating.

What is really happening?

You may be thinking that she no longer loves or appreciates you. That maybe you have done something wrong or she is getting mean. Actually, there are changes taking Senior Care in Montclair, NJplace in her brain because of the Alzheimer’s disease. These changes will accelerate as brain impairment continues to progress.

As a natural consequence of this brain impairment, her awareness of people around her will diminish. She will become less and less expressive and she will show fewer indications of appreciation. Remember her abilities are diminishing, as are her thinking capabilities and memories. If she continually questions you as to whether you love her or still care about her, it could be that she is seeking some reassurance. She may be feeling that she is losing you because of her decreasing abilities.

What can you do to reassure her?

Try not to take offense at her comments or questions about whether you still love her or not. Remember it is the Alzheimer’s talking. Taking offense will just get her agitated and even more insecure than she is feeling right now.

Reassure her of your love for her and that you do care about her. You may have to say it several times or even frequently throughout the day, depending on whether she is able to remember it or not. But your soft voice and reassuring hug will give her a calming impression.

Try to get her as involved as possible with other people who have an encouraging and supporting influence on her, such as other family members, an Alzheimer’s family support group if one is available locally, etc.

Take care of yourself too

It can be difficult emotionally for you at this time, as you feel her slipping away and not remembering some of the love and memories you have shared together. You will need some encouragement and support in your life as well. Surround yourself with family and friends who can give you the support you need.
