Senior Care in Clifton, NJ: Gelatin Jigglers

If you have been providing senior care for an aging loved one, you know how important it is to plan a variety of activities that will keep your aging loved one’s mind sharp. Especially if you have young children, integrating senior care with childcare is a valuable way to make the most out of your time and create precious family memories that will last a lifetime. Some of the best combined senior care and childcare activities are those that are simple enough for both groups to enjoy, but also challenging enough that they are able to help one another throughout the process. While you are available to provide supervision and assistance when needed, allowing your children and aging loved ones to do as much of the project on their own as possible. This will encourage communication, interaction and a strong sense of pride and accomplishment when the project is completed.

When considering fun activities to integrate into your senior care, it is always valuable to choose the ones that have multiple purposes. Creating gelatin jigglers is a multistep process that requires several different types of thinking as well as an element of personal expression and creativity. When the project is complete, your aging loved one and Senior Care in Clifton, NJchildren get to enjoy the cool, delicious treat. Even if you do not have young children, this is a fun activity to enjoy with your aging loved one. Encourage her to be as involved as her cognitive abilities allow, and customize the project to coordinate with the time of year and any upcoming events.

Supplies that you will need include:

  • Boiling water
  • Powdered gelatin
  • A high sided jellyroll pan
  • Cookie cutters

If you are using commercially available flavored powdered gelatin you only need to combine it with boiling water. If, however, you are utilizing unflavored powdered gelatin, you will need to add fruit juice, sugar or other flavorings to make it more palatable. Combine the boiling water with the gelatin and stir until fully dissolved. Be careful not to boil too long or mix too hard, or a foam will develop on the top. Unlike when preparing a normal gelatin recipe, you will not add ice water to this mixture. Instead pour the boiling water directly into the jellyroll pan. To make it easier to remove the gelatin later, consider spraying the pan with a very light coating of vegetable oil prior to adding the gelatin.

Slide the pan flat into the refrigerator and allow it to set for several hours. When it is firm, remove the pan and dip the bottom into warm water for 15 seconds. Use cookie cutters to create shapes out of the gelatin. Shake the cookie cutter gently before lifting it to help make it easier to remove the shape. Use the end of a butter knife or a very small spatula to lift these shapes out of the pan and onto a serving dish.
